Dementia prevention and causes
Neurologists on island say the age of dementia diagnosis is now appearing in people aged 40–50.
The Caribbean has a disproportionately high number of dementia cases compared to the global average, and diet can be a contributing factor.
“Dementia starts at middle age — it doesn’t start when you’re 80 and forgetting the names of your family members. It starts with things like untreated blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, smoking — things like that,” said neurologist Dr Ryan Punambolam.
Dr Ryan says a healthy diet, consistent exercise, and socialising will help keep the brain healthy.
