Storm Prep for Pets: What You Need to Know Before the Next Hurricane
Local experts urge pet owners to prepare go-bags with food, water, and medical records. Space at pet-friendly shelters is limited and requires early planning. For those traveling off-island, documentation must be ready months in advance.
Veterinarian Dr Vanessa Pustam emphasised that sheltering pets indoors at home during storms is essential. But if you’re planning on heading to a shelter, One Dog at a Time’s Caroline Johnson recommends preparing ahead of time.
At the shelter, it’s recommended that you take at least 3–7 days’ worth of food your pets are used to, water, and medicines, as well as medical records (including proof of vaccinations), a collar or harness with an ID tag, a leash, a crate or pet carrier, and toys.

Passport office encourages preparedness for hurricane season
In preparation for hurricane season, which begins on 1 June, it is recommended all residents have important documents updated and secured.
The Cayman Islands Passport and Corporate Services Office is urging the public to ensure their passports are valid and to check the expiry date. To gain entry into some countries, passports must be valid for at least six months after the date of intended departure.
If a passport will expire during the course of the hurricane season, consider renewing it as soon as possible.
If a visa will be needed to gain entry into a country, applicants should apply now — before emergency travel may be needed due to a hurricane.
