Hit-and-run Leaves one person dead
Just after 6 a.m. on Monday 21 April, tragedy struck along a quiet stretch near Lake Destiny Drive in Bodden Town when a 39-year-old cyclist was hit by a blue Subaru Forester in what police are calling a hit-and-run.
But the impact didn’t end there. Police say the driver sped off, only to crash moments later into a parked car and a concrete wall, before eventually fleeing the scene on foot.
A few hours later, the 33-year-old suspect, also from Bodden Town, showed up at the hospital with injuries believed to be from the crash. He was arrested and has since been charged with manslaughter and dangerous driving.
The cyclist was rushed to hospital by ambulance, but died from his injuries. His death has shocked the local cycling community and sparked fresh calls for better protection on Cayman’s roads.
In a letter to the editor on Monday afternoon, one concerned cyclist urged motorists to take more care and called for government to do more to educate road users.
