Legislation on renter’s rights in the pipeline
Government is seeking to revive, update and implement a law that would put limits on runaway rental increases.
Legislation on landlords and tenants in Cayman has not been updated since the 19th century.
A new law was passed in 2009 that restricted any residential rent increase to once-per-year and introduced a mandatory 60-day notice period. But that legislation – drafted after a Law Reform Commission review triggered by post- Hurricane Ivan rent spikes and landlord-tenant disputes – was never brought into force.
