Cayman’s Department of Environmental Health has enlisted Island Recycling to haul away half a million tyres from the George Town landfill, as well as thousands of tons of scrap metal from the Sister Islands. Officials say the waste poses a serious fire risk and is eating up valuable landfill space, with the tyres alone covering roughly 13 acres. The government-funded project, worth nearly $3 million, is expected to begin as early as November and wrap up by May 2027.
