Beach litter poses serious threat to baby turtles
Three incidents involving litter around turtle nests and hatchlings in less than three weeks have prompted the Department of Environment to urge people to keep Cayman’s beaches clear of rubbish.
One hatchling died after becoming trapped inside a discarded bottle cap buried above its nest, while two others were found entangled in fishing line. In a separate incident, volunteers removed nine bags of rubbish from around two turtle nests, with two hatchlings observed at the site the following morning.
